STORIES TO HEAR           a storyteller’s life

WHAT DO I DO DURING SCHOOL VISITS?

I always start by reading from one of my books, choosing the one I think most appropriate for the occasion.  I talk to students about how the book came to be created and what it means to me.   I offer suggestions as to how students may solve their own writing problems.  I make time for lots of questions about all aspects of a writer’s life.

WHAT DO STUDENTS GAIN?

Insight into the writing process.

Awareness that my writing difficulties are just the same as theirs are.

Background information to help them better understand my books.

A sense of the power of literature.

Recognition of writerly dedication.

Enthusiasm sparked by the enthusiasm I bring.

HOW DO STUDENTS RESPOND?

During the visit, they are eager and attentive.  Afterwards, I’m told they rush to the library to get the books for themselves.  Partly, my books speak of how we all have within us what we need to manage.  I think the students are touched by this through our talks.  I’m noted for appealing to reluctant readers as well as bookworms and for pleasure in schools of all kinds.

WHAT AGES DO I TALK TO?

All ages from kindergarten up through high school.  I do, however, insist on a limited age range for each visit and prefer not to work with more than two classes at a time.

HOW LONG IS EACH SESSION?

Forty-five minutes to an hour depending on school schedules.

WHAT DO I NEED?

It’s best if students have had some experience with my books before I get there.  Class study is wonderful but I know that’s not always possible and I enjoy introducing my books to students as well.  I like a class of water and I need a quiet, contained setting.  Lunch is grand if I’m in a school all day.

WHAT ARE MY RATES?

Contact me and we’ll discuss it.  Just remember, I live quite near to Ottawa, Ontario.  If I have to travel a distance I need to be sure my expenses will be covered.
